iDev: 6 Useful Features of Xcode to Simplify iOS App Development

Hi Friends,

Xcode is an IDE used by iPhone developer or iPad app developer to do coding or developing iOS apps.

Xcode has many small and highly useful features which sometimes we are not aware of or it may happen that we may not be using those features at its optimum level in order to ease our iOS application development. For example : comments tag, code snippets, PO command and many more…

Here in this tutorial we will see 6 such useful features of Xcode which we can use during app development.

1. FIXME

This tag is used for reminding yourself of things that you need to fix back again at some later stage of iOS app programming.

2. TODO

This tag is used for reminding yourself of things that you need to get back to at some point. Generally it is found at the top of the source file within the main comment block to remind us of features that need to update or add. Here you can see that.

3. #warning

It is used when you want to differentiate code into two category. One is for experiment and another is actual. For example.

If we change 0(zero) to 1(one). Than warning is automatically removed as shown below.

This technique will help you to ensure that you never release codes that includes / excludes code that shouldn’t / should be there.

4. po

This command is useful at debug time. In normal scenario, to print the value of a variable we have to move mouse pointer there and click on it and select print description print value of it. This is sometimes not programming friendly. With po command, this can be done easily and quickly. Lets see one example of it.

In this example, I have created one string named str and have set a value to it. Now to print that value without moving cursor over there, we  just have to write “po variable name” in output window and then press Enter. As shown below, you will get value stored inside variable.

5. Code snippets

As a developer I observe that complex applications always need a well formatted code. So it is easy for other iOS developer to understand the code. So for this we will have to organize code in a standard format. But to organize code of larger applications, it will take some time. Xcode provides a functionality called snippets library. With the use of it we can organize code easily.

Xcode provides Code Snippets Library section where you can find all default code snippets provided by it. We can also create our custom code snippets as per our need and can add it over here for future use.  Here are some examples of using code snippets…

When we add new ViewController class. The default code is show as below.

I want to follow structure like all Memory related methods are first and view life cycle methods are last like below.

To reuse the same structure again and again we need add this code into snippets library. Now to add this code into snippets library, select text that you want to add like below,

Press and hold mouse left key than Drag it to code snippets library. After adding it to code snippets library, you will see a default name “My Code Snippet”. You can edit the name and also add description and shortcut key to it for your reference.

Lets see how we can use this newly created code snippet.

Now to use this newly created code snippet, Go back to Code Editor and just type “vlm”. You will find that Xcode will display an option for create code snippets with its title and summary as per shown below. Once you select it, you will get your defined structure with pragma.

It is also possible to highlight code snippet’s part which will be change after executing it. For example. Pragma mark name which is not common and can be changed as per requirement. For that we can use create code snippets with parameter as per below

Select this parameterised code and create code snippets with same process which we followed earlier. Now when you use this code snippets, You will see code with parameter as per below

Press Tab key, It will directly move you to that and change the name accordingly.

6. Find your File

To find file Quickly in a project press cmd + shift + o.

Open Quickly window will open. Write just name of your file that you are looking for and then press Enter. It will redirect you on that file.

iDev: Basics of Mobile Application Testing

Mobile Application Testing Technique :

In this article we are going to see the basic things which are usually expected to be tested for any mobile application.

What is Mobile Application Testing?

It is a process to test mobile applications for its functionality, usability and consistency. Any mobile application will either come pre-installed or can be installed from mobile software distribution platform.

Different types of testing that can be done for any Mobile Application

1. Installation Testing :  This process should be user friendly and should consume less time during the process of installation in the device.
2. Functional Testing :  It focuses on functioning of the application.
3. Stress / Performance Testing :  It focuses on the performance and load that an application can take while performing.
4. Power Consumption Testing :  It focuses on mobile battery power consumption while the application is running.
5. Interrupt Testing :  Any interrupt caused due to activities such as phone calls, SMS or MMS, battery down, Network not found etc.
6. Usability Testing :  It should satisfy all user requirements and its a key to the success of any application.

1. Installation Testing

Installing any mobile app should be very simple and we should display the progress of the installation with proper information. So the user does not keep guessing when will the installation get completed.

2. Functional Testing

This is completely dependent on the functioning of the application. Following key points should be taken care of when doing functional testing of the any mobile app.

1. Make sure all the functional flow of the application works as per the business logic.
2. The application developed must be tested thoroughly in all major devices for its functionality.
3. If the memory is full still the application should work properly.
4. If application is integrated with any e-pay/payment gateway then it should make sure that the data is highly secured.
5. If application supports multiple orientation then the app should function accordingly.
6. If application is forcefully stopped during page loading or navigating then it should provide proper informative message.
7. Application should not crash any time and if it happens then we should debug the scenario why, where and how it crashed.
8. Monkey testing must be performed by the QA.

3. Stress/Performance Testing

The most painful part of any application is stress & performance testing and it should be handled efficiently.

1. It finds the exception which are unnoticed during functional and user interface testing.
2. Application should be capable of handling 20% more than the maximum expected load.
3. If a user performs same operation again and again then it should not crash or get hanged.
4. If multiple applications are running at a time in the device then our application should be smart enough to release the phone’s memory for other applications when our app is in background and when our app is active then it should work without any abnormal behaviour.
5. The load time should not be too much.
6. Negative test cases should always be performed for better performance of the application.
7. When battery is low and the app is running, verify that the app runs perfectly without any crashes or limitations imposed by OS of that device.

4. Power Consumption Testing

• To start this testing, make sure mobile device  is charged to 100%, so it is easy to measure the power consumption.
• Make a note of the time, when you start the app and its testing.
• Perform the tests with different scenarios and based on the start time and ending time, measure the battery power consumption.

5. Interrupt Testing

There are different external factors which can be very crucial and should be considered while developing any application.

Network Connection type : Application should easily run on Wi-Fi or 4G or 3G or 2G connections.

• If a device moves out of any network then it should automatically switch to other network.
• If there is no SIM card in the device then also the app should work properly ( provided it is independent of Mobile Service Network ).
• If Airplane mode is active then also app should work properly ( provided it is independent of any data service requirements ). And if there is any function dependent on it and not working then it should provide proper information to the user.

SD Card Interaction : This factor can play a vital role in the mobile device.

• The application should provide user friendly message when any function cannot be performed due to missing SD card.
• App should provide an option to move the app to SD card and its functioning should also be proper.

Phone calls and other interruption

• When working with any application and there is any interruption due to any phone calls or other reasons then the application should go in paused mode and run in background. And after that interruption is over, app should return back to foreground but in pause mode.

6. Usability Testing

The most important factor which should be taken extra care while developing a mobile application is its usability. The success and failure of any application depends on its User Interface.

• UI of the app should be as per device screen size and no text/control should be cutting off.
• Text should be readable.
• Provide progress indicator if the app/page is loading. So user is aware that the app is fetching some data.
• Button size should be proper and large enough that it should be easily clickable by the large fingertip and spacing between 2 buttons should also be good enough.

So this is it in the basics of any mobile application testing from my side. I know that I have left other QA areas in this article which also needs to be tested in any mobile app. I will try to cover those in my next article. iDev: How to pause or wait execution until block executes with semaphore in iOS

Hi Friends, 

Todays we discuss some important concept of threads:

If we want any execution to wait or pause until block finishes its execution and frees up the resources, then we have to use dispatch semaphore. A dispatch semaphore works same as regular semaphore. Only one exception is, it takes a lesser amount of time to obtain a dispatch semaphore than it takes with traditional system semaphore when resources are available.

Below are the steps for using a dispatch semaphore:

1. Create the semaphore using the dispatch_semaphore_create function. If you want to indicate the number of resources available, you can specify the positive integer here.
2. To wait on the semaphore in each task, call dispatch_semaphore_wait.
3. Acquire the resource and do your work, when the wait call returns.
4. Release the resource and signal the semaphore by calling the functiondispatch_semaphore_signal.

 

Here is the example how these steps works:

Consider you have to insert some data in SQLite DB in background with dispatch_async but at same time you want to wait until this block executes and give you total number of count of inserted data in DB and show it on table. In this case you can use semaphore to stop further execution of code until the block finishes its job. So if you have table reload code after dispatch_async block then it will not execute until dispatch_async finishes its execution.

Every once in a while I read something that is so insightful, so clearly written and so well documented that it enters my own personal pantheon of “Best Ever” documents. I recently added a new, simply divine article titled Best Practices for Scientific Computing and hope that everyone reading this post also takes the time to read that article. I’m including the outline here only to encourage you to read the article in it’s entirety.  It is extremely well written.

1. Write programs for people, not computers.
   1. a program should not require its readers to hold more than a handful of facts in memory at once
   2. names should be consistent, distinctive and meaningful
   3. code style and formatting should be consistent
   4. all aspects of software development should be broken down into tasks roughly an hour long
2. Automate repetitive tasks.
   1. rely on the computer to repeat tasks
   2. save recent commands in a file for re-use
   3. use a build tool to automate scientific workflows
3. Use the computer to record history.
   1. software tools should be  used to track computational work automatically
4. Make incremental changes.
   1. work in small steps with frequent feedback and course correction
5. Use version control.
   1. use a version control system
   2. everything that has been created manually should be put in version control
6. Don’t repeat yourself (or others).
   1. every piece of data must have a single authoritative representation in the system
   2. code should be modularized rather than copied and pasted
   3. re-use code instead of rewriting it
7. Plan for mistakes.
   1. add assertions to programs to check their operation
   2. use an off-the-shelf unit testing library
   3. use all available oracles when testing programs
   4. turn bugs into test cases
   5. use a symbolic debugger
8. Optimize software only after it works correctly.
   1. use a profiler to identify bottlenecks
   2. write code in the highest-level language possible
9. Document design and purpose, not mechanics.
   1. document interfaces and reasons, not implementations
   2. refactor code instead of explaining how it works
   3. embed the documentation for a piece of software in that software
10. Collaborate.
    1. use pre-merge code reviews
    2. use pair programming when bringing someone new up to speed and when tackling particularly tricky problems
